IMAGE SIZING!!!!!!!

Well i want to make the canvas for the picture to be exactly like the actuall image. say i had a picture of a shotgun then the canvas was to big .
Well is there a way so the image has like a translucent background so you onlysee the actuall image well here is a picture...

ya i want to make it so you cant see the white. any computer programs.
Im using pixelmator and paintbrush.

pixen. There is a little wand tool that you can select a continuous area of a certain color and press delete so you can get a transparency area.
